70 Years of the Museum

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)Henan Museum was established in 1927, located on Sanshengmiao Street of Kaifeng City--the former capital of Henan Province. It was one of China's the earliest museums.

  globul1a.gif (96 bytes)In May 1928, the museum was renamed the National Museum.

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)On December 1, 1930, the museum once again was renamed Henan Museum.

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)During the period from 1930 to 1937, Henan Museum enjoyed great prosperity. It was renowned as the second largest museum of China in terms of its collections. It was only second to the Palace Museum of Beijing.

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)In July 1937, the War of Resistance against Japan broke out and  about 6000 pieces of its collections were transported from Kaifeng City to Chongqing City, Sichuan Province.

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)During the war, the museum was known as Henan Provincial Museum. Part of its collections were damaged.

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)In 1949, about 5000 pieces of its collections were selected and transferred from Chongqing to Taiwan. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Henan Museum, thanks to its extremely advantageous locality and the favorable circumstances, gradually restored its vitality.

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)In 1961 when the capital of Henan Province was moved from Kaifeng to Zhengzhou, the museum was also moved to Zhengzhou City.

globul1a.gif (96 bytes)In July 1997 the new Henan Museum was founded on the basis of the amalgamation of the original Henan Provincial Museum with the Stone Carving Art Gallery of the Central Plains.
