Ming Dynasty (A.D.1368-1644)

Unearthed at Jiaxian, Henan

In ancient China, the house was not only good for providing a calm and comfortable living environment, but also met the needs of the strict patriarchal clan system for order of priority between the old and young and for fine differentiations of people's positions and ranks. The size of the compound depended upon the social status and economic condition of the owner. The large-scale pottery compounds, unearthed at Jiaxian County in 1960, is a vivid reflection of the rich people's luxurious life style : large housing compound, farming fields spreading north and south, groups of slaves and servants, stables and sheds filled with horses and cattle.
