Lithyalin (from Greek lithos, “stone”) is a type of glass resembling semiprecious stones, developed by the glass technologist Friedrich Egermann in 1828. Its manufacture combined hot-forming techniques and painted glass decoration. Lithyalin glass was mainly used to make small objects, such as beakers, trays and flacons, with rims and edges decorated with gilding and their surfaces painted with flowers, insects, chinoiserie motifs, also in gold.

The “Gothic cut pattern”, mostly in the form of Gothic windows (referred to as “gotische fenstern” in the glassworks’ archival records), was a frequent type of cut design adorning glass objects produced by the Novy Svět glassworks. Outer-cased glass, with colour overlays on clear glass, was a visually compelling favourite during the Biedermeier period.
