Bone Paixiao Panpipe

Provenance: unearthed from Changzikou Tomb in Taiqinggong (lit. “Palace of the Supreme Purity”), Luyi, Henan Province in 1997.

Some one thousand years ago, a large quantity of exquisitely crafted funeral goods were buried with a Shang elite in Changzikou tomb in present-day Luyi county, of which include quite a lot musical instruments, the present bone panxiao panpipe is one of them. It is made by bundling 13 fowl leg bones graduated in length. A total of 5 bone panxiao panpipes were discovered in the Changzikou tomb, which are the earliest examples of its kind archaeologically discovered in China to date.
